Emergencies Lambton: Winter Travel Tips
Winter travel season has arrived and with it comes the need to prepare for emergencies that occur on the road.
Before you leave, check the forecast and also visit 511 Ontario which provides travellers with information on road conditions, weather, radar imagery, and plow routes.
If travel seems like it might be difficult, consider postponing or cancelling your trip.
If you do head out, always dress for the weather: bring along suitable clothing in case you have to walk or remain in your vehicle for a long period of time.
If you encounter inclement weather or reduced visibility, slow down and allow plenty of space between yourself and other vehicles. Turn your headlights on to ensure you can be seen by other motorists.
If you become stranded, it is often best to stay with your vehicle and wait for help. Make sure you have an emergency supplies kit for these situations. For details on what to include, visit EmergenciesLambton.ca.

2025 progress on the Canatara Cabin Restoration Project
2025 brought major milestones for the Canatara Cabin Restoration Project.
Once the weather cooperated, chinking was installed between the logs, followed by the construction of a new chimney and fireplace. The bricks used for this work have an intriguing local history story of their own; they originally formed the one-room school S.S. #18 in Plympton Township! The school was built in 1924 on Douglas Line, east of Uttoxeter Road. These reclaimed bricks are a perfect historical fit because the cabin will be interpreted in the 1930s era, the decade it was dismantled in Huron County and transported by barge to Sarnia. Lambton Heritage Museum would like to acknowledge Jim Rade and the team at Rade Construction, who donated the salvaged bricks and have been an integral part of the cabin restoration project.
Additional work remaining includes installing and trimming the windows and doors to seal the structure and laying the wooden floorboards on the first floor. The focus next year will shift to moving in artifacts and developing interpretation in anticipation of welcoming the public to this historic space.
This work can only continue with your support. Help us reach our $100,000 goal by visiting the Canatara Cabin page at heritagemuseum.ca to learn more and donate today. With so much progress made, you can help us carry the cabin into its next chapter!
This heritage preservation initiative is partially funded by the Government of Canada through the Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario (FedDev Ontario).
