Watford Library celebrates reopening following renovations

Watford, ON – The County of Lambton and the Township of Warwick celebrated the reopening of Watford Library today, marking the completion of renovations that have modernized the historic Carnegie library while respecting its heritage and character.

The project represents a significant investment by both municipalities to improve accessibility, functionality and the overall library experience, ensuring the building continues to meet the evolving needs of the community for decades to come.

The renovations were completed in two phases, beginning with foundational repairs and improvements undertaken by the Township of Warwick. This work included repairing portions of the building's foundation, replacing deteriorated masonry and renovating two lower-level storage spaces to support library operations.

The second phase included a series of interior improvements completed by both the County and Township.

The County of Lambton's improvements focused on creating a more accessible, welcoming and flexible library environment. A relocated, accessible service desk and improved sightlines have created a more open and functional layout, while new shelving, furnishings and equipment provide greater flexibility for collections and programming. Additional improvements included a change table in the washroom, updated flooring and paint in the lower-level programming and meeting space, and upgrades to electrical, data and security infrastructure.

The Township of Warwick also completed improvements to the building's upper level, including the removal of outdated wall paneling and ceiling tiles, along with new flooring, lighting and paint.

“Watford Library has been part of this community for generations, and this investment ensures it will continue to be a place where residents can learn, connect and discover,” said Kevin Marriott, Warden of the County of Lambton. “Through our partnership with the Township of Warwick, we've been able to preserve an important piece of local history while investing in a welcoming and accessible space for the future.”

Originally constructed as a Carnegie Library, Watford Library has served generations of residents. In its early years, books were kept behind the service desk and retrieved by library staff upon request. Today, the library offers access to a wide range of collections, technology, programs and services that support learning, creativity and community connection.

Efforts to recognize the building's history are also underway, with heritage interpretation being developed in collaboration with Lambton County Archives and the Watford and District Historical Society.

“Watford Library is an important part of our community's history and its future,” said Todd Case, Mayor of the Township of Warwick. “We're proud to have partnered with the County of Lambton on these improvements, ensuring this historic building remains a welcoming and functional space for residents of all ages.”

The reopening celebration coincides with Ontario Public Library Week, taking place October 18 to 24, 2026. This year's theme, I Love My Library, recognizes the important role public libraries play in providing access to information, encouraging lifelong learning and bringing communities together.

“Public libraries are about much more than books. They are places where people of all ages can access resources, explore new interests and connect with their communities,” said Darlene Coke, Manager, Library Services. “This project is an investment not only in the building, but in the people who use it and the dedicated library staff who make these services possible every day.”

Watford Library officially reopened to the public on October 19, 2026. Today's celebration included remarks from local dignitaries and an official ribbon cutting, followed by an opportunity for attendees to explore the renovated space.
