Apply for Affordable Housing

Ready to apply for affordable housing? Start by checking your eligibility and reviewing available housing options, then complete an application form and submit your supporting documents.

Step One: Eligibility Check

To qualify for housing assistance, applicants must:

✔ Be 16 years of age or older;

✔ Be able to live independently;

✔ Be Canadian Citizens, Landed Immigrants or Refugee Claimants;

✔ NOT owe arrears to any social housing provider;

✔ NOT have been found by the Landlord & Tenant Board or a court of law to have misrepresented income with regards to rent-geared-to-income assistance; and

✔ Complete the full application including building preferences.

Step Two: Review Housing Options

Please be sure to review your housing preferences carefully before submitting your application. You may select from a variety of housing options, including County of Lambton Owned Units,  Non-Profit Housing Providers, Co-op Co-operative Housing Provider, Rent Supplement Units, Modified units, Semi-detached Units, and the Portable Housing Benefit, which proves a monthly subsidy that can be used toward eligible private market housing anywhere in Lambton County. You may qualify for different unit sizes based on your household composition.

Please select only the housing types and unit sizes you are prepared to accept, as you will receive ONE (1) offer of housing, and declining that offer may result in your application being removed from the Centralized Waiting List.

Supportive housing units are modified to be accessible and/or have support services. 

To apply for a supportive housing unit, a doctor or support agency must confirm in writing that at least one member of the household requires an accessible or supported unit. 

The Housing Services Department can provide information on how to contact providers. Please contact Housing Services at 519-344-2062 ext. 2035 for more information. 

Please note, eligibility for supportive housing is not based on income.

Please note the following when you are completing an application:

  • All applicants over the age of 16 must sign the application form.
  • Incomplete applications may be cancelled if required information is not provided.
  • Eligibility must be confirmed before a household can be added to the waiting list.

  • Pick up an application at: Housing Services, 162 Lochiel Street, Sarnia

  • Mail your completed application to:

After You Apply

  1. Submit any required supporting documents.

  1. Housing Services reviews your application.

  2. You will be notified if additional information is required.

  3. If eligible, your household will be added to the waiting list.
